Transmission Repair
There are two basic types of automatic transmissions. The front wheel drive version has a differential and is referred to as a transaxle. This is fully automatic, electronically controlled front wheel drive and features four forward gear ranges (including overdrive) and reverse. A rear wheel drive vehicle has no such differential, and is simply called a transmission. It has four forward gear ranges (minus the overdrive) and reverse.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN I HAVE A PROBLEM?
You will know you have a transmission problem when your vehicle fails to shift properly. Sometimes a simple clog in the filter is the culprit. A clogged filter can mimic a much more serious problem. It is important the level and condition of the transmission fluid be inspected by a professional for diagnostic purposes. Discuss with your transmission professional the correct transmission fluid for your automobile. Using the correct transmission fluid can make a big difference.

When diagnosing automatic transmission problems, the key element is to ensure the engine is operating properly. If it is not, the wrong signal will be sent to the transmission, causing it to shift at the wrong time. If your automotive professional has determined that the engine is running properly, they may run these tests to diagnose your transmission problem:

Air Pressure Test:
This test substitutes air for fluid and tests bands and serves in your automatic transmission.

Line Pressure Test:
This test will determine if your line pressure is too high or low.

Shift Point Tests:
Under optimal conditions, shifts will occur at specific times according to specific throttle conditions.

Stall Test:
Your automotive professional will with service and parking brakes applied, depress your accelerator briefly; when your engine's RPMs go as high as your transmission will allow (holding the throttle open for no more than 5 seconds at a time), checking the stall speed. This test checks clutches, low and reverse bands arid also your engine's performance.

Transmission Fluid Leak Test
Your automotive professional will utilize this test to check for leakage. They will check speedometer cable connector at the transmission; Q-rings, oil pan gasket and fluid filler tube connection. Replacement of any damaged parts and tighten all fittings to proper torque may be necessary. They will also check engine coolant system for leakage as well.
You may also wish to consider rebuilt transmissions and/or rebuilt transmission components
